Hello, my name is Musta Tornius and I've with the help of several fellow DUST Mercenaries, been working on a guide for the newer players of our community.
DUST 514 can be quite a daunting FPS game when you first try it out, and most likely quite overwhelming. Hopefully the basic knowledge you need to enjoy DUST can be found in the guide. It's not meant to be comprehensive guide on every little aspect of DUST, but it does aim to give you the knowledge you need to get going!
The guide will be updated every now and then when it's no longer accurate and things have changed. Feel free to post suggestions in this thread on what you'd like to see included or changed. Any inaccuracies reported will be graciously received.
Thank you guys that helped me make this guide possible, especially JasonPearson, Grit Breather, Heinz, Argo Filch, G Torq, CCP Saberwing & CCP Frame and anyone else I've forgotten!
The pdf can be found here on CCPs very own servers: New Players Guide to DUST 514
Last Update: 17.1.2014

Quick note. The Skirmish map you have up is a picture of Fracture Road not Line Harvest as the subtitle says.
Good catch, it was originally another picture which is why the names are mixed up. I'll add it to the list for v2 (coming after 1.8 sometime).
Thanks everyone for having a look. I realise this guide is not of much use to most people who have been around for a while as it's aimed at the newbros, but it's nice that you're double checking stuff :)

Basically just a video version of it, touching on some of the more important points.
By all means, if it inspires you then go ahead and make a video version. I'm not a big video person myself but I can always include references to your work.
you can always find me on IRC if you want a chat about it.

I totally agree with this. I love seeing player content being made.I had some time and realised that this guide didn't exist in this form anywhere, so I put some effort into it and made it happen!

Hope once the suits & weapons currently on SiSi are deployed this gets updated quicker than the official manual has been in the past
well that is only dependent on how much spare time I have. i'll prolly have a new version up a week after patch at latest!

Mountain Doody wrote:Suggestions: Add to grenades section: Grenades' fuse time is long enough that they are fairly easily avoidable. Improve your chances of a kill by cooking the grenade - hold the grenade button for a second or two before throwing it and your enemy will have less time to react. Under 'Staying ISK Positive' this is a little confusing: Quote:Say you lose 5 suits each worth 10.000ISK (10k ISK) in a game then your total loss for that game is 50k, if you win 100k for that match then you have just netted 50k isk making you richer than you were before the match!
ThereGÇÖs always the risk that you waste an expensive fitting, which can easily cost more than 100k each, one time too many and only gain 200k in a match. Maybe something like: "On the other hand. there's always the risk that you lose more expensive fits. After two losses of a 100k suit, a 200k battle reward puts you right where you started." Also I suggest, title the document according to the most recent patch, and add a revision suffix, like NewPlayersGuidetoDUST514-v1.7.a.pdf Advantages: The content at a particular URL wouldn't change (it's considered good practice to keep the same information at the same URL) The URL or filename itself makes it obvious how recent the information is. I would also like to see some further information on vehicle upgrades skills. Is it worth getting advanced or proto turrets? In what situations?
All good stuff, I'll add it to the todo list.

If you are going to bookmark it, I recommend bookmarking this thread rather than the pdf file as the URL might change with future iterations. Last Update: 17.1.2014 First off, my hats off to you for taking the time to actually make something like this. It looks great and tries to give a new player information. Now the bad parts... it's got many incorrect statements as well as improper terminologies throughout the document. So many that it will cause lots of confusion really. I've only skimmed it for all of 5 minutes so far, but I don't see how you conclude that the Amarr Race uses both armor AND shield? And Caldari don't just use Railguns, they use missiles too. Seriously, this document has a lot of inconsistencies with the game. But in the end it is better than nothing and looks good for a first attempt.
/me puts on armour and wizard hat. Right, amarr currently has same hp for armour and shields hence dual tanking ( as well as slots for either option except in sentinel).
As for caldari infantry, they only have railguns (and swarms). tanks have missiles as well as railguns. feel free to do a bullet point list of what you consider factual fallacies and I'll check em over in time for the next update, cheers!

Something to add for the next version, with one eight there's gonna be quite a few changes so might hold off a week or two before doing it after the patch.
I guess I should get a work in progress version going. What I don't want to do is bloat the document with too much stuff. I like it to have what a newbro needs to get going, without having too much details, we all know how much there is to learn about DUST -_o

I like it to have what a newbro needs to get going, without having too much details, we all know how much there is to learn about DUST -_o With that in mind I'd suggest compacting the 4 pages about light weapons and expanding the 3 lines about equipment. I'd also re-order things a little ... I don't think Corporations and Squads should be an afterthought on page 34 in a game who's entire philosophy is built around teamwork > all ... I'd drop the Economics down a bit and put squads/corporations up near the top with the Game Types info. Reason being, people don't want to trawl through an entire 40 page guide before playing a battle ... so give them the basics first and let them come back for more when they realise 'hey that was some useful info, I wonder what else I can learn'. So I'd give them a little reading on game types and how to join squads n corps ... then tell them to go try some battles in starter fits, but come back soon to learn a bit about how best to spend those skill points or isk or make different fittings or vehicles etc. Great job though ... looks like you've put some time and effort in ... above is just my opinions on where you could go from here ... who knows, in 10 years you could be publishing a pamphlet version to be bundled in the DUST 514 Collectors Edition !
Not really any decent way of lessening the page requirements of light weapons without shrinking the images which I was adviced not to do. I'm a step ahead of you with the equipment, my wip version has a much larger section on them!
I disagree with the ordering, the table of content works as links, so you can just press on the link that interests you rather than having to read through everything. I do believe new players won't try squads and definitely not corps as their first steps into learning a new game so I left it till a little later.
You can after all play this game solo with varying success. Economics is one of the core concepts of this game so I do believe it is the first subject to tackle.
Thank you for your feedback, I appreciate that you took the time to put your thoughts down!

Pish posh, I'll leave it up to the players to figure it out for themselves if they want to play or not :) . Even when you're getting proto stomped the hardest there is nothing stopping you from grabbing that needle or militia assault rifle and learn something new.

It is light enough to make it an enjoyable read, while still managing to present a lot of information. I like how it takes a step back and introduces the broader game.
There should really be a copy of this guide in every Merc Quarters, allowing you to open the PDF in game.
Thank you very much Fox, I appreciate the kind words of a fellow guide maker! That is pretty much what I was aiming for when I created it, something easily digested but still covering what I considered essential.
Thanks for the feedback, too!

First update for the guide is done and posted, link is still the same. I took all the feedback into account and implemented most of it. I've added equipment and modules a bit more in depth this time. I also revised some sections that affected 1.8 such as weapons.
I was thinking for the next iteration to maybe have a new chapter in it called Strategies or something similar, in which you have one suit per sub chapter and a small say half a page text to go along with it explaining how to best use the suit. This section could be made by others and not just me.
Anyway, look me up on IRC or email me at mustatornius at gmail.com if you're interested in contributing a small section in it. No lolfits though or proto suits thanks. It is after all a new player guide.

Terry Webber wrote:Hey, Musta, will you be updating the guide after 1.9?
I think this is the first time I've logged on to the forums properly since shortly after Fan Fest. Needless to say I was quite shocked and disappointed in ccps way letting us know about legion etc. A big chunk of 3rd party work died that day for DUST.
To be honest, I've played DUST maybe once after fan fest. I have given thought to coming back but not at the moment. Maybe I'll check 1.9 out in a few weeks.
I'm in full time employment now with my hands full and not playing DUST any longer so I can't really justify the time expense it would take to re-write the guide. However, if you're interested in helping out in updating the guide then I can give you access to a copy on google drive where you can update it under my supervision :). DUST is a complicated game and newbies deserve a chance of having the correct information at their disposal.
Anyone who is interested in doing some work to update the guide, feel free to drop me a line @ [email protected] if you're interested. Apologies in advance if I'm slow at replying to you or if I will decline your help, it is mostly my work after all and I have a high expectation of the standard of work :)
On a side note, I can't believe I haven't been booted from Molon Labe for being inactive for half a year! <3
